According to SciFi Wire, CBS and FanLib.com have teamed together to allow fan fiction in the Star Trek universe.
I have been concerned over FanLib.com, and more importantly the terms of agreement that are signed when you join to post materials over there. Basically, what the whole thing comes down to is they're trying to turn the fan's writings into a revenue stream for the franchise owners, leaving the writers of the material in question out of that revenue stream. The whole thing is rather, well, fishy.
And then they go and do something like this.
I've long wanted a Star Wars fan fiction contest in the same way that they have the Star Wars fan film contest. I think it's rather inane that they don't, but of course I am biased as I have a distinct preference for the written word over the movie screen.
Maybe, now that Star Trek is doing it, Star Wars won't be too far behind.

It is interesting that Star Wars has very much embraced fan films, but has stayed distant from fan writing. Maybe it's because of the relative quality of the fan produced material in each genre? Not sure. In general, it seems that the fan films I've seen are at least okay. Whereas the fan writing I've seen is definitely a much sketchier sampling.
Yes it is.
Frankly, I have seen some bad fan films-but the thing is it costs a lot more (in time, effort and money) to produce a fan film over a piece of fan fiction.
As for fan fiction, well I've seen plenty of utter drivel out there, but I have also seen some stuff that is better than some of what has been officially produced by Lucas Books. ESPECIALLY if you include the Glove of Darth Vader series in the comparison pool.
