Why do Monday's Get Here So Fast?

Well, that weekend blew right past me without so much as a "by your leave." Of course, I was busy. First I had to strip off all of my beautiful tinting on my truck. Apparently, the "Great" state of Mississippi doesn't allow its populace to have tinting below a 26. Mine was merely 14.

After a sliced finger from the razor blades I was using, I got it all off and then pouted to my beloved wife. At which point she reminded me that I still had to mow and trim the backyard.

Glee.

The reason my chores were stacked on top of one another like that was because Sunday I went to CoastCon down in Biloxi. I went with the Mandalorians and the 501st (though I'm not a member of the 501st) and had a grand time.

There was a Vader, an Anakin Skywalker, a Mando whose armor was decorated in Saints colors, and the mascots for MechaCon.

Then there were the LARPers.

Anyways, I asked my buddy (who was the Vader) if I could get a copy of the pictures and he said sure, so I'll toss them up soon enough. My only real complaint about the weekend was that the Con wasn't quite busy enough on a Sunday to warrant it costing $20. By accounts, Omegacon was cheaper and had more stuff to do. Additionally, MechaCon has a much better pricing structure:

• Friday - $15
• Saturday - $20
• Sunday - $10
• All Weekend - $40

This is opposed to CoastCon's $40 for the weekend or $20 per day. And yes m'love, I do kind of want to go to MechaCon at the start of August.

Beyond that, there's not a whole lot going down in SF world at the moment. I do have a few things on the plate, as I need to blog Macross Frontier episode 2 (which I watched last night--and which I need to figure out how to take screenshots from a MKV file) and I have DEFINITELY got to write up my Revelation and Hal Spacejock 2 reviews.

As an other-wise unrelated note, one of my Star Wars friends has joined a new blog: Mommy Babble.

It's Friday!!!

So, It's Friday Morning, and the world is in a pretty satin bag, or something like that. Anyways, I had to turn my car over to those evil mechanic people so that they could charge me an exorbitant price to recharge my AC coolant. Remember those heady-days, pre-Big Brother (and not the CBS TV show) when folks could recharge their own AC units? Ah, Big Government, making sure you don't do what you need to.

Enough about my complaints regarding dystopian leftist governments, let's talk about what's bringing folks here.

Not bad. The anime stuff brings a goodly number of folks, as does the I Am Legend review. What's odd is the number 2 there "scream noise." I'm almost scared to ask what that's about. I know what post it's directing to--it's the one about the ultimate Millennium Falcon Lego set. Yet I never thought folks would come here due to that search term. Alas.

Anyways, it's the new anime season, and I'm in the midst of determining what I'll shall be reviewing this time around. So far, this is the list that I've watched, and my thoughts on things.

BLASSREITER - I can admit I just didn't like this episode. I'm not sure why, the premise it's built on is solid, and I SHOULD like it, but it just didn't click.

Code Geass R2 - This was as fun as season 1. Of course everyone and their brother are going to be reviewing it, so I doubt I will as well.

Kanokon -- Kanokon the manga was a fun little read. This was disjointed and filled with over-the-top fanservice. I seriously doubt I'll give episode 2 a chance even.

Kurenai -- My initial thought on reading the plot synopsis was that I'd be bored with this. I mean it's almost like a serious version of Hayate according tot he plot. Yet it was actually a decent first episode. I'll probably pick this one up as something that I review.

Macross FRONTIER - Whee!! MACROSS!!!! [fanboi drool] *ahem* This had pretty pictures and a great storyline. Though I liked the release around Christmas time better than this one.

S.A. ~Special A~ -- I tried to watch this. I really did. Yet the CLAMP-like designs made it sooo hard. I don't know why, but that whole over-elongated limb thing just distracts me way too much from the story.

Soul Eater -- I really liked this. Sure, the character and setting designs are off-kilter, but that's part of the fun.

To LOVEru -- This is heading towards becoming a typical harem/slice-of-life anime similar to Tenchi. It's not bad, and I'll probably pick it up in my list of things I review.

Vampire Knight -- This was fun. Sure, it's all emo and angst and soap opera, but it has pretty pictures and an interesting set up. I mean it's a school for vampires, and there are 2 humans who have to protect the vampires and the regular students from each other.

So, as it stands, expect episode reviews from at least one of the following:

• Kurenai
• Soule Eater
• To LOVEru
• Vampire Knight

I don't want to take all of them, because there's things I'm waiting on in the next week or so that I want to give a chance to first.

Star Wars Hyperspace

A few years ago, I subscribed to Hyperspace. It was an okay thing, you got access to old short stories from the magazines, web comics, and a subscription to Insider. And no ads on the website. That there made it almost worth while to purchase the subscription.

Well, I had it for a year--and during that entire year, no new fiction was added to the archive, no fiction appeared in the magazine and there weren't even any new comics. And then they added ads back in.

So, I happily let my subscription lapse.

Well, today, I found out that they're putting up more fiction in Hyperspace; and it's brand-spanking new fiction as well.

So, now I'm thinking it's gonna be worth the cost to get it again. I mean, it's prose!! New stories I've not read yet. Heck, if they push out one new short story (about 10K words) every quarter then I'd be happy to pay the 15 dollars per year cost.

Let's be honest, I'd be ecstatic.

Anyways, here's to LFL doing SOMETHING right since the start of the NJO.

Monday Morning, yet again...

Well, after last Friday's little storm--which took out a good portion of the Jackson Metro Area power grid, I've been kind of neglecting all things geek.

I know, I know, I'm a horrid geek-blogger. But I'm sure I'll get over it. After all, the new anime season is now coming out, with the first few episodes of things appearing. Though, my first download for this season has been something of a bust. I grabbed Kanokon and only made it halfway (if even that far) through the first episode before I turned it off, somewhat bored.

It could be because I've read the manga, but that first episode just lacked something--like character introductions. Maybe they appeared in the second half that I missed, but I was just less than impressed.

Alas, such is life.

Friday's are for Remakes

Woah. Just woah.

Seriously.

I say that, because remakes of classic '80's trash-sf is heading our way. Up first, is a remake of the time-traveling dipsticks, Bill and Ted. Yes, the Keanu Reaves Bill and Ted. I cringe at the very thought of such things.

But it gets better. And actually, this time, I'm not being facetious. They're also plans for either a remake or another sequel for Short Circuit. Truth be told, this actually has the possibility for being a good thing. Rampaging, sentient robots are always fun.

Of course, it could be utterly sucktastic as well. After all, one only has to look towards all the OTHER remakes that have been produced in the past few years to realize that.

Which brings up the point of why on earth are the studios making so many remakes these days. Back in the eighties, you never saw remakes. You got whole swatches of brand new movies. Sure, some of them were things like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure or Earth Girls are Easy. But, then there was also some awesome things like Blade Runner and Ice Pirates.

The point is that they made new things. They went and got stories that hadn't been told before and made us movies out of them.

And it's not like there aren't any SF things out there. Just quickly glancing through my recent reading list, you could make any of the following into movies:

• Hal Spacejock (I'd SO pay to see this ironic farce on the big screen (oh, yeah, and sequels!))
• Tremaire (and sequels!)
• Agent to the Stars
• Old Man's War (and sequels!)
• Cell
• Scroogled (It'd need a bit more fleshing out, but it so could work)

I could go on, (especially with the concept of live-actioning manga or anime) but one gets the picture.

Alas, I fear we shall have to suffer such travesties for the time being.

BUT I do have good news. Cartoon Network has begun letting little details spill about the upcoming Clone Wars series from Lucas. Specifically, that it will be a part of a programming block that airs on Friday nights, also featuring a new Batman series and the upcoming new Ben 10 series. I'm actually excited about all three of them.

The final bit of interesting, and good news, is reported here. Basically, the anime studio Gonzo, is releasing BLASSREITER and Tower of Druaga ~Aegis of URUK~ as low-def downloads, complete with English subtitles almost immediately after they are aired in Japan.

I like this. One of my biggest complaints about anime--especially purchasing them as DVDs--is the fact that one doesn't know what one is getting. Not every series that is available on DVD is aired. One often doesn't know what a series is or is about. Unlike say, purchasing a DVD of Gilmore Girls or one of the many, many Law and Orders, where you've been bombarded with the episodes on broadcast and cable television over and over again for the past decade.

Anyways, back to the thought above, and remakes, I do have something of a confession.

There are some remakes that I like.

Yes, I can admit it. I enjoyed, quite a lot, the Lost in Space remake. I don't know why, but I just enjoyed it. My least favorite remake though, would have to be The Dukes of Hazard. I loved that show growing up, and what was produced earlier in this millenium in that movie made me cringe and weep with horror.
